The goal of the procedure is to make the ears symmetrical and reshape any deformed cartilage. If necessary, the procedure can change the shape and size of the ear, too.

Otoplasty is more commonly performed on young children, because the ear has reached 80 percent of its adult size by the time a child reaches the age of five. Teenagers and young adults are also good candidates for ear reshaping.

The procedure involves an incision behind the ear. The excess cartilage causing the protrusion can either be sculpted or folded over. Sometimes, part of the cartilage is removed. The incision is then stitched together, pulling the ear closer to the head.
